What is this tool?

A character and word counter tallies the characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and bytes (UTF-8) of text you type or paste, live as you go. It also estimates reading and speaking time, and counts characters made of several code points — like emoji or composed Korean syllables — as one. You can pick a character-limit preset like Twitter (280) or SMS and watch the remaining count change color, and every calculation runs inside your own browser.

When to use it

Fitting a character limit on social media like Twitter or Instagram, checking the length of a cover letter or report (characters excluding spaces), estimating how long a script will take to read aloud, or seeing how many SMS segments a message splits into by byte count. It's also commonly used to price translation or proofreading work by length.

Tips

"With spaces" and "without spaces" counts are required in different situations, so check which the form wants. In UTF-8 a Korean character is 3 bytes, so byte-based limits are reached sooner than the character count suggests. Characters built from several code points — emoji, family emoji — are still counted as one, the way a person sees them. The preset's color (green → orange → red) shows at a glance how close you are to the limit.

FAQ

Why do character counts with and without spaces differ?

Spaces include tabs, line breaks, etc. Most apps (social media, forms) set limits by character count including spaces.

How are emoji counted?

Emoji and ZWJ sequences count as 1 character each (via Intl.Segmenter).

How is reading time calculated?

We divide word count by your reading speed (default 200 WPM).

How is speaking time calculated?

We divide word count by your speaking speed (default 130 WPM).

Why do bytes differ from character count?

In UTF-8, Korean characters and emoji take multiple bytes. Byte limits are common in programming.

How do I check a character limit?

Pick a preset like Twitter or SMS, or type your own number, and the remaining count and any overage are shown in color (green → orange → red).

Does it work offline?

Yes. Every calculation runs inside your browser, so it works offline, and the text you enter is never sent anywhere.
