Goneung (High-Ability)

/ko.nɯŋ/

Definition

From "고지능" (high intelligence): being smart and impressively skilled at getting things done. "고능하다" (adjective) praises someone's sharp judgment and competence; "고능아" is the noun for such a person.

Examples

  • The concept for this plan is so goneung—how did they even come up with it?
  • Sticking to a study schedule every single day? Total goneung-a.

Origin

Derived from "고지능" (high intelligence); spread through game streams and online communities. Its antonym is "저능하다" (low ability).

"고능하다" (adjective) and "고능아" (noun) are used together.

Because "고능아" plays on the derogatory "저능아" (low-ability), some dislike the echo—but in fan and community usage it is usually sincere, playful praise for someone's cleverness or efficiency.
